For many years the Cathedral of Our Lady of Walsingham in Houston, Texas, has supported the work of Let The Children Live! and Fr Peter has received numerous invitations, which he has always accepted, to visit the parish and make Appeals. This year the parish priest, Fr Hough, went a step further and invited four of Funvini’s choristers to accompany Fr Peter and sing with the Cathedral’s choir.
Once the four had been chosen there was much preparation to be done because passports had to be obtained and this demanded much filling-in of forms, and visas had to be applied for, necessitating a trip to the Embassy in Bogotá, accompanied by many prayers! There was great excitement when the passports arrived, and even greater rejoicing when all four visas were granted!
The visit took place from 4th–11th of December and the choristers proved to be very good ambassadors for the charity. The people of the parish took them to their hearts and were clearly very impressed when they saw the end product of the charity’s work and realised what our boys and girls are capable of achieving, given a chance.
In addition to singing with the choir of the Cathedral the choristers were taken out on sight-seeing tours and visits.
One visit was to NASA, the International Space Station on the outskirts of Houston, and another was to San Antonia. In fact, the week was packed full of events and the charity is grateful to Fr Hough and everyone else who was involved in the visit for making it possible. It was a great experience for the children, and we hope that the parishioners now feel an even stronger link to Funvini’s work in Medellín. In May 2018 one of the congregation will be visiting Colombia to see it for herself and then take back to Houston a first-hand account of the work they are helping to support.
