On July 1st six of the youngsters from our school project graduated from High School. This is the largest group graduation that we have had, and all of them have done the whole of their accelerated secondary education with us. One is a young mum; another is a lad who was living in the street when he started, but is now back at home with his mum; and another is a boy who was bullied mercilessly at every school he had ever been to and had reacted against this. In Funvini – an organisation of last resort – he was not bullied or judged, so he has managed to stay the course with us. Having their High School Certificate is an essential preliminary for obtaining a decent job or further qualifcations.
It is very commendable that Funvini’s staff have managed to keep the two-year course running throughout the pandemic. Had they not, the young people would almost certainly have given up and been drawn into the gangs and prostitution.
